This regular expression matches basic HTML or XML tags, including both opening (<tag>) and closing (</tag>) elements. It also supports simple attributes with values enclosed in double quotes, permitting alphanumeric characters and specific special characters like periods, colons, and slashes. While useful for basic markup extraction or simple parsing tasks, it contains literal pipe characters within its character classes, which may inadvertently match pipes in tag names or attribute values.
