Test, validate and match regular expressions
This regular expression captures two parts of an assignment statement: the variable or key before a space-separated equals sign (" = "), and a bracketed value on the right side. It is typically used to parse key-value pairs or list assignments in Python scripts or configuration files. Note that the bracket-matching portion (\[*.\]) is technically flawed and will only match an optional opening bracket, any single character, and a closing bracket.
