This regex uses PCRE subroutine definitions to match either a lowercase letter from 'a' to 'e' or a digit from '1' to '3'. It demonstrates the (?(DEFINE)...) construct to declare reusable named subpatterns, then alternates between invoking them. Useful for modular regex design or matching a specific small character set.
