This regex matches a numeric prefix followed by an underscore and then a sequence of non-digit characters, ending just before a trailing underscore. It is useful for extracting the first two components of strings that are delimited by underscores, such as filenames or identifiers like '123_abc_def'. The lookahead ensures the final underscore is not consumed, allowing further processing.
